New Years Resolutions - Changing Relationships With Our Alcoholic Spouse & Loved Ones

For some of us, January 1st is just another day.

For others, it is the day to start anew - to address those issues that have troubled us throughout the preceding year or to cement our thoughts around self improvement.

For those living with active alcoholism in the family or whose loved one’s drinking has become unmanageable, January 1st my be the last straw - the day that something needs to change.

Let that change begin with you in 2009.

When my wife was actively drinking, I tried everything I could to make the change in her without addressing my own deficiencies - the deficiencies that enabled her to continue down her path of alcoholism.

Only now, looking back, can I see that trying to change my wife was a feudal effort. I can’t control my wife’s actions or her drinking - only she can.

What I can control is my reaction to her behaviors.

For 2009, I choose to continue working my program of recovery through Al-Anon while my wife works her program through Alcoholics Anonymous.

Separate programs of recovery with mutual benefits.

If today is the day you’ve decided to change your relationship with your alcoholic family member or loved one - consider attending an Al-Anon recovery meeting in your area this weekend.

Let the change in the relationship begin with a healthier you in 2009.

Happy New Year to each one of you supporting Loving An Alcoholic!
