Happy Thanksgiving!

Today I am grateful for so many things in my life, most of which start with the recovery that has taken place in my family.

I am grateful for having Alanon in my life. Without this support, I would be the same person I was when my wife was actively drinking. I have grown so much spiritually since finding this outlet that I barely recognize the person I was. I still have my moments, my slip-ups, but Alanon allows me to focus on progress not perfection.

I am grateful for my wife’s recovery. As I pushed and pushed my wife to get help, she fell further and further. My wife’s recovery has little to do with me, it was the choice she made, to give her will and her life over to her Higher Power. It is the support she receives in Alcoholics Anonymous and the extended family that goes along with the program. If she were to relapse, it would be this family, not me that would guide her back to sobriety.

I am grateful for the recovery community that I am blessed to be a part of. I work my own program and my wife, hers. We travel in different circles within the same Alanon and Alcoholic Anonymous community but we have the same purpose - to maintain our individual recovery and to find a closer relationship with God.

I am grateful for having two beautiful children that came out of our family crisis unscathed. My biggest worries when my wife was actively drinking, when I filed for divorce, was the long term impact on my children. I believe my children are in a better place now than before things in our family became so bad. My son and daughter are being raised in the Alanon and Alcoholics Anonymous recovery community. They will grow up knowing that they are susceptible to addiction and that they have options and resources.

I am grateful for the programs that allow my wife and I to recover, as a family.
