God As I Understand Him
Friday, November 21st, 2008
Today’s post is inspired by the Al-anon meeting I attended today.
Step 11 - Sought through prayer and meditation to our conscious contact with God as we understood Him.
What I love about working this program is that I don’t have to define my Higher Power. I can leave the religious aspects God at the door and focus on building my connection on a purely spiritual level. As I mentioned in previous posts, growing up I felt as if I had a spiritual void. For all of the negatives that go along with active alcoholism, my wife’s drinking forced me to search for answers - those answers for me, were attending Al-anon meetings and connecting with my Higher Power.
Al-anon provided me the tools to find my Higher Power through the reading of literature, such as Courage to Change, and the exchange of thoughts and experiences at my local meetings. It was not a requirement for entry.
I feel that I should emphasize the word “my”. Those of us looking for support come from diverse backgrounds. Each of us may have a different take on what God is or how we connect with our Higher Power. In Al-anon this does not matter. What matters is that you have a family member or loved one that is an alcoholic or addict. That you need the support of a loving group to help you gain perspective.
As I will leave each post - If you, or someone you know, loves an alcoholic or addict, I would encourage you to find a local Al-Anon meeting to attend. This is your first step towards healing.
You can find information on Al-Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous under the “Resources” tab.
